Short answer: Yes. A good barrel chair is comfortable for long periods of sitting because the curved back goes around your back and sides, so you are supported from more than one direction. At Oak Wood Wine Barrels, the Lounge Chair ($1,079.10) has a solid oak Wine Barrel shell and memory-foam upholstery, and the Luxury Captain Chair ($1,349.10) is about two inches taller with custom tufting. Comfort is still a matter of fit, so compare the sizes below to a chair you already like.

Are barrel chairs comfortable to sit in?
For the majority of people, yes. The back of a barrel chair is curved, not flat, so it touches your back and sides simultaneously. You can sit up to talk, lean a little to look at someone or sit back with a book, and the chair still holds you.
There are three things that decide whether a particular barrel chair is comfortable for you:
- the padding on the seat and back;
- the size of the chair in relation to your body;
- the height and finish of the back.
This is how each one works, using actual figures from our product pages.
What makes a barrel chair comfortable?
Padding: memory foam on every chair
Every barrel chair sold by Oak Wood Wine Barrels has memory-foam upholstery: the lounge chairs, the captain chairs and the stave dining chairs, and the ottoman too. Memory foam softens with your body heat and spreads your weight across the seat instead of pushing at just a few points. An hour into a movie or a long conversation, that's what you notice.
Size: room to shift your weight
Barrel chairs are about the width of the barrel they're built from, so they're more spacious than a standard dining chair. Our Lounge Chair is approximately 28.2 inches long, 27.8 inches wide and 36.9 inches high. The Luxury Captain Chair measures approximately 27.6 by 27.6 by 38.9 inches. Every barrel is a little different, so sizes can be off by as much as 10% either way. That width means you can change position, tuck a foot under you, or sit sideways.
The back: smooth or tufted
The Lounge Chair has a back upholstered in memory foam. The Luxury Captain Chair is our barrel chair with the tallest overall height (about 38.9 inches, 2 inches taller than the Lounge Chair), with custom tufted upholstery. If you like lots of back behind you, start with the captain chair.
Are barrel chairs good for your back?
If it fits you, a barrel chair might be a good chair for your back, but no chair cures back pain, and what is good for one person may not suit another. If you have a back problem, find out the seat height and depth your doctor or physical therapist recommends, and compare those numbers to the chair before you buy it.
What usually helps, in any chair:
- Sit all the way back. Your lower back should be touching the backrest, with a small gap between the edge of the seat and the backs of your knees.
- Keep your feet flat on the floor, or on a footrest if they do not reach.
- Relax your shoulders. If you have to reach or hunch, the chair is too large for you or too far from the table.
- Change position. No back likes to be still for hours. Our lounge and captain chairs are on wheels, so it's easy to get up and resettle.

Lounge chair or captain chair: which is more comfortable?
It depends on how you sit. They both have memory-foam upholstery, removable seat storage and wheels. The differences:
- Back: the captain chair is tufted and about 2 inches taller.
- Footprint: nearly the same, 27.6 by 27.6 inches for the captain chair vs. 28.2 by 27.8 inches for the lounge chair.
- Price: $1,349.10 vs. $1,079.10, a difference of $270 per chair.
For long reading or sipping sessions in one spot, go with the captain chair. The lounge chair is the one if you want a pair facing a sofa, or four around a coffee table.
How can you check a barrel chair's fit before you buy?
You can't sit in a chair through a screen, so take measurements:
- Measure a chair you already find comfortable: its overall height, width and depth.
- Compare it with the listing. On each of our product pages we give length, width and height.
- Check doorways and turns against the width of the chair, about 27.8 inches for the lounge chair.
- Plan the spot. Leave space in front for your legs and behind to roll the chair back.
- Ask for what isn't listed. If you need a number like seat height, call (832) 933-8787.
