What should every home bar have?
Along with the four pieces, plan for these:
- A surface at standing height. Barrel cabinet bars are about kitchen-counter height, 37 to 38.6 inches tall, so nobody has to bend to pour.
- Closed storage. The bottles and glasses are behind a door, dust-free, and the bar looks neat the next morning.

Cabinet barrel or closed barrel: which bar base do you need?
Barrel bars are built in two ways, and the choice determines what you can add later.
- Cabinet barrel: a shelf inside, with a door in one side of the barrel. You get storage but no foot rail, because the steel rail is for barrels with no doors. Examples include the Bar Cabinet ($1,237.50) and the Top Shelf Bar Cabinet ($1,259.10), which includes multi-layer bottle storage, concealed storage, and wheels.
- Closed barrel: the barrel is intact and has been completely cleaned, sanded and finished with spar varnish. You lose storage but you do get a foot rail. The Bistro Pub Set (from $1,404) has a closed barrel, a 37-inch steel foot rail and a 35.4-inch round top.
Our recommendation: if the bar is to stand in the open with people on every side, take a closed barrel with a foot rail. If it has to hold the bottles and stand against a wall, pick a cabinet barrel.
How many bar stools does a home bar need?
For a couple or a small room, two stools are a good fit. The four-stool sets are built around a 35.4-inch round top, which fits four. Two barrels will do for eight. Standard stool width is 18.9 inches.
