What are the sizes of wine barrels?
Size Matters: A Barrel Dimension Deep Dive
At Oak Wood Wine Barrels, we're fascinated by the history and craftsmanship behind every barrel we transform. And one key question always comes up: just how big are wine barrels? Turns out, there's more to it than meets the eye!
The Bordeaux Standard
The most iconic wine barrel is the Bordeaux-style barrique. It holds approximately:
Volume: 225 liters (about 59 gallons) – enough for roughly 300 bottles of wine!
Height: Usually around 35 inches
Diameter: Widest at the ""bilge"" (the middle), around 28 inches, tapering slightly towards the ends.
Why This Size?
Centuries ago, this was about the most a single person could comfortably roll. It was efficient for transport in ships, cellars, and cobblestone streets.
Beyond Bordeaux: Size Variations
While Bordeaux barrels are most common, winemakers sometimes use different sizes:
Burgundies: Slightly smaller and rounder than their Bordeaux cousins, with around 228 liters volume.
Puncheons: These big boys hold around 500 liters, perfect for larger batches of wine.
Demi-Muids: Even larger at approximately 600 liters!
Specialty Barrels: Winemakers sometimes experiment with smaller barrels for specific wines.
