Short answer: An heirloom retirement gift is a piece of furniture that the retiree uses every day of the new routine and then passes on. The Wine Barrel Lounge Chair ($1,079.10) from Oak Wood Wine Barrels is a reading chair with memory foam and storage under the seat. The Top Shelf Bar Cabinet ($1,259.10) gives a collection of bourbon a proper home. Both are under $1,500, as are the other ten picks below.

What is a good retirement gift that lasts?
One that's used in the new routine, not stored. A desk accessory loses its desk. A bottle disappears in a year. A chair, a table or a bar is used every day of retirement, and eventually it becomes "Mom's chair" or "Dad's chair" in somebody else's home. Here are some furniture or bar pieces made from retired Bordeaux-type Wine Barrels, finished with spar varnish.
Pick based on how they'll spend the time: reading, pouring wine, collecting bourbon or hosting the family.

How do you give furniture at a retirement party?
Give a card, and the furniture will arrive at their home. You can't put a chair on the gift table, and the retiree shouldn't have to move it at the end of the night. Print a photo of the piece and add a line about where it came from and when it will be delivered.
Oak Wood Wine Barrels ships in-stock orders within 5 business days, free in the continental U.S. Larger orders are delivered by appointment, so the family can choose a day when someone will be home. We deliver all over Houston. You can also schedule a local pickup by appointment at (832) 933-8787.
How do coworkers split a bigger retirement gift?
First, select the piece. Then split the cost. Ten coworkers pitch in for the Lounge Chair ($1,079.10) at roughly $108 a pop. Five pitch in about $50 each for the 5-Bottle Stave Wall Rack ($247.50). One person orders and gets the money in one go, and all the names are on the card.
For a smaller gift from one person, the Perfect Host Gift Pack ($136) includes a lazy Susan, two cigar ashtrays and a 2-glass balance made from barrel staves. For a 50th, 60th or 70th birthday, see Milestone Birthday Ahead?
