Whiskey Barrel Table Top Size: Diameter Chart and Fit Guide

Short answer: A round top about 35 to 36 inches across will fit a standard 53-gallon Whiskey Barrel or a 59-gallon Wine Barrel, leaving a few inches of clearance all around the widest part of the barrel and room for four stools. Oak Wood Wine Barrels has one in that size, the Round Top with Glass Center ($595): 35.4 inches in diameter and 2 inches thick, made for 53- to 59-gallon barrels.

Prices as of October 6, 2026; each link shows live stock.

What size table top for a Whiskey Barrel?

Size the top from the widest part of the barrel, not the lid. A barrel is wider in the middle (the bilge) and narrower toward each end (the heads). A top that fits only the head looks too small, with the belly of the barrel sticking out past it. A top much wider than the belly puts a great deal of table on a narrow base.

Our finished Wine Barrels are 27.4 inches wide at their widest point. A 35.4-inch top overhangs that by 4 inches on either side, leaving room for knees and the edge of a plate with most of the top still over the barrel. Whiskey Barrels are a bit slimmer than Wine Barrels, so the same top overhangs a 53-gallon barrel a bit more.

How big is the top of the barrel itself?

The head, the barrel's own lid, is much smaller than a tabletop. A Bordeaux-type Wine Barrel head measures approximately 22 inches across. Our Hoop Side Table ($391.50) is topped with a Wine Barrel top, which measures 21.7 inches across. A 53-gallon Whiskey Barrel head is in the same ballpark, about 21 to 22 inches.

Two drinks fit in a 22-inch circle at a standing party. It doesn't hold plates, cards or the elbows of four people. That is why a barrel pub table gets a larger round top.

Diameter chart: how much overhang and elbow room?

The chart assumes a barrel 27.4 inches across at the widest (our Wine Barrels) and a 22-inch head. "Edge per person" is the top's circumference shared by four stools. As a size reference, our stave bar stools measure 18.9 inches in width. The 35.4-inch row is the only top we sell; the other rows are for comparison only.

Top diameter Overhang past the barrel's widest point (each side) Overhang past the head (each side) Edge per person with 4 stools
22 in (the head alone) none: the barrel is 2.7 in wider on each side none 17.3 in
30 in 1.3 in 4 in 23.6 in
35.4 in (our round top) 4 in 6.7 in 27.8 in
40 in 6.3 in 9 in 31.4 in
42 in 7.3 in 10 in 33 in

How to read it:

  • Under about 30 inches, the top just clears the barrel's belly, and four 18.9-inch stools leave little space between them.
  • Around 35 inches, four people get almost 28 inches of edge each, and the overhang is still about 4 inches.
  • Over 40 inches, you have more elbow room, but more of the top overhangs the barrel, so a leaning elbow at the edge has more leverage.

What is the standard size of a Wine Barrel table top?

There is no industry standard for barrel tops. Ours is 35.4 inches across, and it is the same size whether sold alone or with one of our Bistro Pub Sets or Multi-Use Bar Sets.

The same top will fit both a 53-gallon Whiskey Barrel and a 59-gallon Wine Barrel. The top is the same on the two barrels, but the foot rail is different: our Foot Rail ($236.50) is 37 inches across in the 59-gallon Wine Barrel version and 34.5 inches in the bourbon and Whiskey Barrel version.

How thick is the top, and how does it attach?

Ours is 2 inches thick, with a glass center set in wire-brushed wood with a spar-varnish finish. It sits on the barrel rim and lifts right off, allowing access to the display under the glass, or allowing you to move the barrel by itself. Angle brackets connect top and barrel when you want it fixed in place.

The removable top also makes for easier measuring. You can put it on your barrel, check the overhang all the way around and center it before you fasten anything.

How do you measure your barrel before buying a top?

  1. Widest point. Take a soft tape and make a circle around the middle of the barrel. Divide that measurement by 3.14. A girth of 86 inches means the barrel is roughly 27.4 inches across.
  2. Head. Measure straight across the top, from rim to rim.
  3. Height. Measure from the floor to the rim and add 2 inches for the top. This will give you an idea of where the table surface will be.
  4. Level. Lay a level on the rim where the top will sit. An old barrel can rock on a bumpy floor; shim it before you fasten a top to it.

Then compare: subtract the widest part of your barrel from 35.4 and cut the result in half. That's your overhang on each side.

Frequently asked questions

Will the round top fit a barrel I already own?

It is made for Wine or Whiskey Barrels of 53 to 59 gallons. Start by measuring the widest part of your barrel; the top is 35.4 inches across and 2 inches thick.

How many stools fit around a 35-inch barrel top?

Four. Oak Wood Wine Barrels pub sets come with a 35.4-inch top and up to four stools, and four stave stools leave almost 28 inches of edge per person.

Can I put a bigger top on a Whiskey Barrel?

Yes, but a 48-inch top would hang more than 10 inches past the belly of the barrel on each side. Keep the top in proportion to the barrel, fasten it down and see that the barrel is level.

Does a Whiskey Barrel need a different top than a Wine Barrel?

No, the same 35.4-inch top fits both. The foot rail is what changes; it is 34.5 inches across for a Whiskey Barrel and 37 inches for a 59-gallon Wine Barrel.
